An esophagogram, commonly known as a barium swallow, is an imaging examination that examines for issues in your upper GI tract. The mouth, back of the throat, oesophagus, stomach, and first section of the small intestine make up your upper GI tract. Fluoroscopy is a type of x-ray that is used in this test. Internal organs move in real time during fluoroscopy. A chalky-tasting liquid containing barium is also consumed as part of the test. Barium is a substance that enhances the visibility of body parts on x-rays.
