A pulmonary function test (PFT) assesses the health of the lungs. The exam determines how much air the lungs can contain as well as how well the child can push air out.
Pulmonary-Function-WebThe PFT machine is sometimes a small restricted chamber with clear walls and a seat within. Your child will be asked to blow into a plastic mouthpiece connected to the machine while wearing a nose plug. The gadget measures the volume of air inhaled and the force with which it is exhaled. To achieve an accurate reading, your child will most likely be required to repeat the test several times.
